Joining Southwark Circle was a breath of fresh air. Working in an office with a happy atmosphere and a worthwhile purpose makes such a difference. Previously I served in the RAF, and then became a commercial photographer before moving into the motorcycle trade which lead me teaching motorcycle mechanics.
I started as a helper with Southwark Circle in my spare time, then during the following year I gradually became more involved and eventually I became one of the full time team. In the office I work with members and helpers to plan helper visits and I am probably the voice you will first hear when you call us. I still keep my hand in by getting out and doing a few DIY and gardening jobs.
My other responsibilities include following new leads and helping people sign up to become part of Southwark Circle.

“As Operations Director I’m responsible for making sure that Southwark Circle runs smoothly, and continues to push the boundaries of what other people think is possible, or indeed sensible! Whether you’re applying to become a Member or Helper, your information will find its way to me and we’ll probably be meeting up sometime soon.
When I’m not at my desk, I’m out in the community talking to anyone who will listen about why they should join. I’m not the quietest person you’ll come across, and having done the voiceover for our videos and appeared on the radio, I’m now awaiting my big break on television...”

Eric Richardson, Neighbourhood Coordinator
"Within Southwark Circle I’m what is known unofficially as a “Super Helper”. Working two days a week for Southwark Circle, I visit members to help with any tasks needed, but also get involved a little bit in more behind the scenes work. With “The Circle” for almost a year now I find nothing more satisfying that receiving the thanks from a member for a job well done, and feel that we, as members and helpers, can all learn so much from each other.
When I am not working in my other job, as a freelance writer and photographer, I relax by running, working on my classic cars, spending time in the great outdoors, and enjoying a chocolate Digestive, biscuits do not get any better." -
Emma Southgate, Head of Service Innovation
"I worked with residents of Southwark, many of whom are now members, to develop Southwark Circle when it was just an idea and have really enjoyed being part of bringing the idea to life. Listening to members suggestions, feedback and thoughts, my job is to make sure that people have an enjoyable and unique experience as a member of Southwark Circle. At the same time, my eyes are peeled for new opportunities for Southwark Circle and for new services that will benefit our members."
